In a strategic move for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on June 19, the DMK has announced its candidates: P Wilson, S R Sivalingam, and Rokkiah Malik. Notably, they have reserved a seat for their ally Makkal Needhi Maiam, with speculation swirling around Kamal Haasan as the likely nominee. MK Stalin has confirmed this collaborative effort with MNM.
DMK announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 19, nominating P Wilson, S R Sivalingam, and Rokkiah Malik, while allocating one seat to ally Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), potentially paving the way for Kamal Haasan’s entry into Parliament, a decision made "as agreed earlier" with MNM, according to DMK president MK Stalin; the election is necessitated by the end of terms for several MPs, including those from DMK, MDMK, and PMK, while AIADMK is yet to name its nominees, with nominations closing on June 9.

DMK has announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The elections are scheduled to be held on June 19.

The ruling party has named three candidates of its own.

One seat has been allocated to its ally, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).

This allocation potentially paves the way for actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s entry into Parliament.

DMK president and Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin addressed the seat-sharing arrangement.

He said the arrangement had been made "as agreed earlier" with MNM.

The DMK’s nominees include sitting MP and senior advocate P Wilson.

Salem East district secretary and former legislator S R Sivalingam is also nominated.

Party spokesperson and noted writer Rokkiah Malik, known as poet Salma, is another nominee.

Wilson was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2019.

He is a former Additional Solicitor General.

Sivalingam previously served as a DMK MLA in 1989 and 1996.

Salma is a longstanding party member.

She contested the 2006 assembly elections but was unsuccessful.

The party’s candidate list reflects a diverse social composition.

Salma belongs to the Muslim community.

Wilson is Christian.

Sivalingam is Hindu.

Observers say this balance underscores the DMK’s inclusive political messaging.

MNM formally named Kamal Haasan as its nominee.

This followed meetings of the party’s executive and administrative committees on Wednesday.

His nomination comes as part of the DMK-MNM understanding.

This understanding was forged during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The upcoming Rajya Sabha election has been necessitated by the end of terms for several MPs.

MPs whose terms are ending include M Shanmugam.

M Mohamed Abdulla's term is also ending.

P Wilson's term is also ending.

These MPs are from the DMK.

Vaiko from the MDMK's term is also ending.

PMK leader and outgoing MP Anbumani Ramadoss’s term is also set to end.

The principal opposition, AIADMK, is expected to win two seats.

This is based on its current strength in the assembly.

AIADMK is yet to name its nominees.

Nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections close on 9 June.

Scrutiny is scheduled for the following day.

Voting will take place on 19 June.

Results will be declared later that evening.
